Golf's Naveed Wins for Second Time This Fall

PALO ALTO, California – Hira Naveed became the first Pepperdine women's golfer ever to win twice in the fall season, as a 3-under 68 on Sunday helped her become co-medalist against an impressive field at the Stanford Intercollegiate.

The Waves also got a hole-in-one from Patricia Wong during the final round at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course. Pepperdine finished in seventh place with a three-day total of 868 (288-283-297). The six teams ahead of the Waves were all in Golfstat's top 30. The #21 Waves finished ahead of four top-50 teams, including #2 UCLA. The Waves also bested four of the eight Pac-12 schools in the field.

Naveed won the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational for her first college victory in September, then closed out the fall season with her second win. She finished no worse than seventh in each of her four fall tournaments and 10 of her 12 rounds were under par.

Naveed is the first Wave with two wins in a full season since Marissa Chow in 2014-15, but no Wave had ever before won twice in the fall. The only Wave to win more than twice in a single season was Katherine Hull with four victories in 2002-03.

PLAYER SCORES

  • Senior Hira Naveed (Perth, Australia) finished with an 8-under 205 (67-70-68), same as UCLA's Mariel Galdiano. Naveed began the round in third place, four shots back of Galdiano. Naveed posted a flawless final round, getting three birdies on her first nine holes and then finishing the tournament with nine straight pars. She had a team-best 12 birdies for the tournament and with 38 pars, she was only two off the tournament high. Naveed's 54-hole score of 8-under was a personal best and tied the seventh-best tournament score in Pepperdine history. This weekend, she also climbed into the Waves' all-time top five for below-par rounds with 26 in her career.
  • Junior Momoka Kobori (Rangiora, New Zealand) tied for 36th place at 219 (75-68-76). She had one birdie during her final round.
  • Senior Hannah Haythorne (Honolulu, Hawai'i/IMG Academy) tied for 47th at 223 (69-78-76). She had two birdies on Sunday.
  • Senior Patricia Wong (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS) tied for 53rd at 224 (78-69-77). She had an ace on the 150-yard eighth hole and had one birdie during the round. It was Pepperdine's first hole-in-one since Somin Lee had one in April 2012.
  • Freshman Sifan He (Shanghai, China) tied for 78th at 235 (77-76-82).
 QUOTABLE

Head Coach Laurie Gibbs said: "The players completed a successful fall and have earned a top-25 ranking. Everyone has improved their games and they will continue to work hard during the break. Hira has a plan to be ready to compete on the LPGA Tour after graduation next spring. She is doing all the right things to improve all aspects of her game and the results reflect her focus."

Hira Naveed said: "This one's a little weird, being co-champs, but a win is a win at the end of the day, so it's pretty cool. I was able to keep my composure all three days, didn't get too ahead of myself, stayed in the moment and just took one shot at a time. I didn't worry about the result. It's not fun having a big gap (between now and the spring season) but it's more time to work on my game and really fine-tune some things. I'll get to go home for Christmas and will enjoy my time off, but at the same time I'm going to keep working and progressing."
