PALO ALTO, Calif. – The No. 8 Pepperdine men's water polo team started off the MPSF Invite in a good way, defeating No. 11 UCSD 10-9. Balazs Kosa and Sean Ferrari contributed seven of the 10 goals for the Waves.
The Waves (10-6) had to stave off a fourth-quarter comeback from the Tritons (10-4) but thanks to some hearty defense, held on for the win.
GAME RECAP
Kosa (Budapest, Hungary/Csik Ferenc Altalanos Iskola es Gimnazium) got the Waves going early, scoring the game's first two goals. Ferrari (Redwood City, Calif./St. Francis HS) followed up with a goal to give the Waves a 3-0 advantage. After three straight goals from the Tritons, Sam Paur (Poway, Calif./Poway HS) gave the Waves a 4-3 lead headed into the second quarter.
The second quarter was all Waves. Kosa not only completed his hat trick, but also a fourth goal in the period. Ferrari got his second goal of the day as well as some great defense kept the Tritons from scoring, giving the Waves a 7-3 lead going into the half.
The third quarter saw a shift in the momentum as the Tritons scored three times, holding the Waves to a single goal from Golden Coast Conference Player of the Week Mate Toth (Balatonalmadi, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Boarding School). The Waves took an 8-6 lead into the final period of play.
While the Tritons outscored the Waves yet again in the fourth period, the lead that was built up by the Waves was just too much for them to overcome. Goals from Paur and Ferrari, who completed his own hat trick on the goal, led the Waves to a one-goal victory.
