MALIBU, Calif. -- The eight-ranked Pepperdine Men's water polo team swept their two games in the GCC vs. WWPA Challenge on Saturday, defeating Loyola Marymount 12-4 in the morning, and a hard-fought 12-9 victory over the 13th ranked UC San Diego in the afternoon. Marko Asic, Chris Dilworth and Mark Urban each had five goals on the day, leading the Waves.

The Waves got off to a hot start against the Lions, scoring the first six goals of the game. The team held the Lions to zero goals in the first quarter, while five different Waves scored in the quarter. LMU got on the board in the second quarter, giving the Waves a five-goal advantage going into the half after the Waves tacked on two goals of there own. In the first half, Asic sored on a five-meter penalty shot to open the game. George Mooney, Sean Thomas, Urban, and Coleman Carpenter all also had a goal in the first quarter, with Urban grabbing his second and third goals of the game in the second quarter.

In the second half, it was all Waves again, with Pepperdine scoring a quick goal from Chris Dilworth, as well as Asic's final two goals. The Lions had a goal at the buzzer of the third quarter to put the game at 10-3 going to the final period. In the fourth, LMU got a single goal, while the Waves got goals from Chandler Rockwell and Artak Arzumanyan, cementing the victory with a final score of 12-4. Keeper Zack Rhodes had five saves and two steals in the first half, before being relieved by Philippe Marco in the second half, who picked up two saves and two steals of his own.

The Waves' second game of the day was a hard-nosed battle against the Tritons of UC San Diego. The Tritons got off to a hot start, scoring five of the game's first seven goals. Asic and Toth each added a goal for Pepperdine, giving the Tritons a two-goal lead going to the second quarter. The Waves outscored UCSD 4-2 in the second quarter, with Dilworth snagging two goals back-to-back, along with Cowan and Sam Paur, getting the game to a 7-6 UCSD lead at the half. After the five-minute break at half, the Waves came out firing on all cylinders. Dilworth got a goal right off the bat in the third quarter to tie the game at seven. After a UCSD goal at the end of the third, the Waves got three in a row from Asic, Urban, and Dilworth to start the fourth quarter, giving the Waves a 10-8 lead, a lead which the Waves would not give up. UCSD did have one more goal, but it was met by goals from Paur and Urban, sealing the victory for the Waves. Zack Rhodes had four saves on the day, including two key saves in the final period of play.
