MALIBU, Calif. -- The No. 7 Pepperdine men's water polo team opened the season on Saturday, defeating MIT 15-5 in the first game, and Harvard 16-7 in the second game of the Bruno Classic, played in Cambridge, Mass. Junior Marko Asic had six goals on the day to lead the Waves.

In the first game of the day, against MIT, the Waves came out firing. They jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, with two goals from both Asic and Chris Dilworth, as well as goals from Mark Urban, George Mooney, and Coleman Carpenter. The Engineers answered with two goals of their own, securing a 7-2 Waves lead heading into the second. In the second quarter, the Waves went right back to work, with two goals from Kenneth Keller, and goals from Blake Brutocao, Chris Dilworth, Urban, and Sam Paur, giving the Waves a 13-4 lead at the half. The second half was much more a defensive half than the first, with only a total of three goals scored in the half, one coming from MIT and the others coming from Mate Toth and Justin Cowan, to give the Waves the first win of the season by a score of 15-5.
Senior Zack Rhodes played the first quarter of the game, grabbing three saves, before being relieved by Philippe Marco, who snagged nine.

The second game of the day saw the team taking on the 10th-ranked Harvard. The Waves once again started off hot, with goals from Keller and Urban in the first three minutes of the game. At the very end of the quarter, with the clock winding down, Zack Rhodes made a great save, kicked it out to Mate Toth, who made a last second lob toward the goal and scored as the first quarter ended, giving the Waves a 5-3 lead going into the second.In the second, both Keller and Mooney got another goal, giving the Waves a 7-3 lead. The Crimson also got a goal, leading to a 7-4 lead headed to the second half.
After a couple quick goals from Harvard, Asic grabbed two more for himself, completing his second hat trick of the day. Goals by Sean Thomas and Paur answered goals by Harvard late in the third and the quarter ended with a score of 11-7 in favor of the Waves. The final quarter was all Waves. Mooney finished off his hat trick, Carpenter got two goals of his own, and Charles Olsen picked up his first goal on the year to close out the win for the Waves, with a score of 16-7.
