SUGAR GROVE, Illinois " Without a senior in the lineup, the Pepperdine women's golf team will head into the offseason eyeing a return to the 2018 NCAA Championships. In what was the first time to nationals for all five players, the Waves wrapped up the 2017 campaign with a 23rd-place finish on Monday.
The Waves improved by double-figures each day and wound up with a three-round total of 958 (330-320-308) at the ultra-difficult par-72 Rich Harvest Farms. Pepperdine edged out Oregon to finish 23rd out of 24 teams.
Pepperdine was making its 12th NCAA Championships appearance and first since 2012.
"Once you get here, you want to come back," Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs said. "The important thing for this group was getting a good experience. Every time you can have an experience like this, you learn something from it. This has been a great group this year and the goal will be to get back to nationals next season and do even better."
Freshman Momoka Kobori (Rangiora, New Zealand) had the Waves' best round of the day, a 2-over 74, as all five Waves shot in the 70s for the first time in the tournament.
Sophomore Hira Naveed (Perth, Australia) was the top-performing Wave overall as she tied for 32nd place at 230 (74-80-76).
Kobori was next, tying for 81st at 237 (82-81-74). Sophomore Patricia Wong (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS) tied for 95th at 241 (88-74-79), junior Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia) was 130th at 252 (86-87-79) and junior Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C.) tied for 131st at 255 (91-85-79).
Wijaya had three birdies on Monday, while Naveed had two and Zhu had one. Kobori recorded 16 pars in her round. For the tournament, Naveed and Wijaya had a team-high-tying five birdies each.
The top eight teams advanced to match play, which begins on Tuesday and concludes on Wednesday with the championship match.
