RESULTSMALIBU, Calif.: The 17th-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team garnered its sixth-consecutive sweep on Saturday at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, shutting out West Coast Conference opponents San Francisco 4-0 in an hour and 20 minutes of playing time.
The Waves, now 13-4 overall this season and still perfect at 5-0 in WCC action, opened the day with doubles wins on courts two and three over San Francisco (4-14, 1-5 WCC). The team then won first sets on all six courts with dominating marks, before earning victories on courts three, six and one to clinch the victory.
In doubles action, the Waves pounced on the competition, going up on all three courts early. Senior Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai and freshman Ashley Lahey opened the day with a 6-1 win over Anna Sokiran and Shanna Dos Santos on court two. The pair now hold a 2-1 record against opponents this season.
Then in the No. 3-position, junior Laura Gulbe and sophomore Dzina Milovanovic bested Hanna Borjeson and Margarita Treyes with a 6-1 result of their own to pull ahead 1-0 heading into singles. The duo has gone 2-1 in dual action this season and has won the last two matches played together.
Gulbe would be the first to finish in singles action, putting down Dos Santos 6-0 in the first set before the Don was forced to retire due to injury and forfeit the match. Gulbe possesses a perfect 2-0 record in dual action from the No. 3 position and has gone 6-5 overall for the Waves in dual play.
With a 2-0 advantage and sizeable victories on all courts, Pepperdine was feeling comfortable. Milovanovic then crushed Jiayu Mu in the No. 6-slot, besting the Don with a 6-1, 6-0 final mark to put her team one-step closer to the clinch. Milovanovic has gone 5-2 in dual play this season.
The Waves' 16th-ranked Lahey would be the deciding clincher with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Genevieve McCloskey on court one. Lahey improved her winning streak to eight-matches. She has gone 11-1 in dual action this season, including a perfect 10-0 record from the No. 2-slot and an even 1-1 record from the top-spot after the USF win.
