MALIBU, Calif.: Junior Laura Gulbe dealt the final blow in the 17th-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team's 5-2 upset over defending NCAA National Champions and 10th-ranked Stanford at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon, clinching the match with a two-set win in the No. 4 position.
The Waves (14-4, 5-0 WCC) opened the day by winning the doubles point with victories on courts one and three over the Cardinal (15-2, 7-0 Pac-12). Pepperdine then continued to roll in singles, picking up wins on courts two, three, four and five to finish with the upset. This is the second-consecutive season the Waves have posted an upset win over the Cardinal.
No. 103-ranked Gulbe battled through both sets against No. 68-ranked Caroline Lampl, amassing a 7-5 win in the first set. In the second set with the score tied 5-5 and the dual on the line, she buckled down and shut down the match with another 7-5 win to clinch the dual for her team.
Pepperdine opened the day with solid doubles action, collecting the first win of the day as 6th-ranked senior Christine Maddox and junior Mayar Sherif downed 67th-ranked Emily Arbuthnott and Taylor Davidson with a 6-3 mark. Stanford then evened the doubles score with a 6-4 win on court two to put all eyes on court three.
The Waves' No. 3-partnership senior Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai and sophomore Dzina Milovanovic bested Caroline Lampl and Emma Higuchi with a 6-4 result to put the Waves up 1-0 early in the day.
In singles action, 32nd-ranked Sherif made quick work of her 45th-ranked Cardinal opponent Taylor Davidson on court three, winning 6-4, 6-1 to push the Waves to a 2-0 gap in the match. Stanford then won on courts six and one to tie the match at 2's with three matches still in action.
In the No. 5 position, Runglerdkriangkrai won her first set 6-3 over 108th-ranked Emily Arbuthnott and then worked to a 6-6 tiebreak in the second set. She dominated her opponent with a 6-1 tiebreak score to earn her team a 3-2 lead in the match and geared up Gulbe to clinch the upset for Pepperdine.
As each side elected to finish out the match, 21st-ranked Ashley Lahey and Stanford's 20th-ranked Melissa Lord completed their match on court two. After losing set one 2-6 and falling behind 2-5 in the second set, the freshman showed her grit and battled back to win the second set 7-6 with an 8-6 tiebreak score.
