MALIBU, Calif.: The 17th-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team shelled out another 4-0 sweep at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Friday afternoon, defeating West Coast Conference opponents Santa Clara. The Waves are now 12-4 overall this season and began WCC play with an uncontested 4-0 record.
Pepperdine first picked up doubles wins on court three and one, before sweeping through singles action with victories on courts six, five and three for the overall win. This match marks the fifth-consecutive sweep for the Waves in the last three weeks of play.
To open the day in doubles action, the Waves posted wins on courts three and one to clinch the point and head into singles with an advantage. First on court three, sophomore Dzina Milovanovic and freshman Ashley Lahey dominated Zeina El Tawil and Giannina Ong with a 6-0 result to open play. After a brief hiatus, the win puts the pairs record at 4-2 in dual action this season.
Then, the 3rd-ranked pair of senior Christine Maddox and junior Mayar Sherif bested Daniella Silva and Madison Clarke with a 6-1 final mark for the doubles clinch to put the Waves up 1-0 early. The duo has gone 6-3 in the top-spot for the waves this season in dual action and is currently on a two-match winning streak.
In singles play, Maddox would finish first with a pair of 6-0 set wins over Giannina Ong in the No. 6 position. Maddox has been the first Wave to finish her singles match in five of the last six matches for Pepperdine. Maddox has chalked up a 6-1 dual record since taking over court six for the team, and has won the last six-straight matches.
With the 2-0 advantage, Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai stepped up big on court five, posting a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Caitlyn Frankel to put the Waves in clinching territory. Runglerdkriangkrai now holds an even 4-4 record in the No. 5 position for her team and is currently on a three-match winning streak.
Sherif, ranked 32nd in the Oracle/ITA rankings, would do the honors for the Waves, amassing a 6-0, 6-1 win over Nabila Farah to clinch the sweep for the Waves. She has gone 6-5 in the No. 3-slot so far this season and is on a sthree-match winning streak.
