PROVO, Utah " The Pepperdine men's golf team's final score of 17-under at the West Coast Conference Championships would have been good enough to win all but three of the previous conference tournaments, but BYU's near-record total on its own course saw the Waves settle for second place on Saturday.
Pepperdine got within a stroke of BYU according to Golfstat partway through the third and final round, but the Cougars pulled away and ended up with a three-day total of a 24-under 840, while the Waves were seven shots back at 847 (286-278-283) at the par-72 Riverside Country Club.
The Waves (#22) and Cougars (#47) entered the tournament as the top two-ranked teams in the conference, but BYU's home-course advantage proved to be too much.
Pepperdine's only better score at the WCC Championships was an 18-under in a victory in 2005. BYU's 24-under was the second-best score in conference history.
"It's disappointing because we came here wanting to win and we didn't have quite enough today," Pepperdine Coach Michael Beard said. "Getting off to a slow start on the first day really made it hard for us to get the win. BYU played great and we were in there until the end. The course was great and for the whole experience, I think the guys had a blast. It'll be a little harder flight home, but I think it will hopefully fire these guys up and get them to work hard for regionals."
The Waves shot 5-under as a team on Saturday behind 2-under 70s from sophomores Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) and Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) and senior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville).
Cootes finished in a tie for seventh place, best among the Waves, with a 4-under 212 (71-71-70).
Geibel tied for 11th with a 2-under 214 (73-71-70), freshman Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) tied for 15th with a 1-under 215 (72-68-75), freshman Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) tied for 20th at 217 (76-68-73) and Theegala tied for 28th at 218 (70-78-70).
Cootes led the team with 12 birdies for the tournament, while Geibel had 11. Geibel had a team-best five on Saturday, while Cootes and Theegala both had four.
Pepperdine has won more WCC titles (18) than any other school.
The NCAA Regionals are next for the Waves (May 15-17). The field will be announced on May 4.
