The Waves (10-8, 5-1 WCC) opened the day with doubles win on courts one and two over the Cougars (13-10, 6-2 WCC), before downing singles opposition on courts one, three, four and five to secure the conference victory. Junior Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) earned the overall clinch on court three for the Waves with a two-set win.
In doubles action, the teams split victories on courts one and three, with Waves No. 1-pair senior Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) and sophomore Jack Van Slyke (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Laurel Springs HS (Calif.)) put down Jeremy Bourgeois and Keaton Cullimore with a 6-1 result. The win is the pair's eighth from the top-spot for the Waves.
Pepperdine would clinch the doubles point on court two as senior Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) and sophomore Gabriel Sidney (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil/Anglo Americano) bested Aidan Carrazedo and Jacob Sullivan with a well-played 6-4 match-up to put the Waves ahead as the teams entered singles action. The duo now possess a 13-2 dual record when playing in the No. 2 position, and have gone 15-5 overall all season.
This doubles point marks the 14th of 18-matches played that the Waves have won the doubles point.
Van Slyke would make quick work of his opponent Matthew Pearce in the No. 4 position, besting the Cougar with a 6-0, 6-3 pair of sets to put the Waves up 2-0. Van Slyke has gone 9-4 in dual action this season, including a 2-0 output when playing in the No. 4-slot for his team.
Shortly after the win on court four, freshman Dane Esses (Houston, Texas/Memorial HS) rolled over Aiden Carrazedo with a 6-4, 6-1 victory on court five. He has gone 11-4 in dual action for the Waves this season, including a 2-1 record when playing in the No. 5-position.
The Waves then lost on court two, leaving three courts in action and the home team in clinching territory with a 3-1 lead.
Iamachkine, Hadlich and Sidney were all nearing the end of their second sets and Iamachkine and Hadlich were fighting for clinching rights. Iamachkine would turn up the heat first on court three, securing the clinch with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over John Pearce to extend the Waves' lead to 4-1.
Although WCC policy mandates clinch-clinch, the Waves and Cougars elected to finish the matches in play due to the scores.
Hadlich had won his first set over Keaton Cullimore in the No. 1 position with a 7-5 result. He was up 5-1 with a 40-15 advantage in the last game when Iamachkine clinched. The senior finished the final set with a 6-1 victory. Also finishing a point out on court six, the Waves were downed to make the final 5-2 with the Waves picking up the WCC victory.
Next, the Waves will host San Diego at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on April 15 at 2 p.m. Seniors Tom Hill, Stefan Menichella and Guilherme Hadlich will be honored at approximately 1:50 p.m. before doubles begins.
