
Men's Golf Improves to Sixth at The Goodwin

PALO ALTO, California " The Pepperdine men's golf team turned in one of the best rounds of the day to move up six spots and earn a solid sixth-place finish at The Goodwin on Saturday.
The Waves were 20 shots better than the day before en route to a 1-under 279, one of just four below-par rounds turned in by the 24 teams on Saturday. That moved them from 12th to sixth with a three-day total of 870 (292-299-279) at the par-70 Stanford Golf Course.
Four of the five teams to finish ahead of the Waves were ranked in the nation's top 15. The 28th-ranked Waves picked up a victory over #19 Colorado and defeated the four other West Coast Conference schools in the field (BYU, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Pacific).
Sophomore Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) had the Waves' best round of the day with a 1-under 69, while sophomore Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) and freshmen Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) and Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) all had even-par 70s.
McCarthy and Theegala both recorded top-20 finishes. McCarthy tied for 13th with a 4-over 214 (68-76-70). Theegala tied for 20th at 215 (75-70-70). He's finished in the top 20 at all 10 tournaments this season.
Cootes had three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 16th hole on Saturday. Theegala had six birdies, while Feagler and McCarthy both had four. For the tournament, McCarthy and Theegala both finished with 12 birdies.
Cootes moved up 21 spots and into a tie for 41st at 219 (72-78-69). Freshman Hunter Epson (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson HS) tied for 75th at 225 (77-75-73). Feagler improved by 27 positions and tied for 80th at 226 (78-78-70).
Pepperdine has its final tune-up prior to the WCC Championships next Saturday and Sunday (April 8-9) at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, California.
