
Waves Have Impressive Finish at Southern Highlands Collegiate

LAS VEGAS, Nevada " A young Pepperdine men's golf team turned in an impressive tie for fourth place in its first appearance at the Southern Highlands Collegiate as play wrapped up on Wednesday.
Competing with a lineup of three freshmen and two sophomores and going up against one of the best tournament fields of the year, the Waves shot a three-day total of a 9-over 873 (282-297-294) at the par-72 Southern Highlands Golf Club. Pepperdine finished in a tie with #10 Stanford. #7 USC won the tournament, followed by #4 Oklahoma State and #11 Texas Tech.
The Waves, ranked #33, defeated two top-10 teams and six top-25 squads. All 15 teams at the tournament were ranked in the top 80 by Golfstat.
Sophomore Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) and freshman Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) posted top-20 performances.
Theegala tied for 12th place with a 2-under 214 (71-70-73). He's finished in the top 20 at all nine tournaments this season, and he's recorded below-par rounds 14 times out of 27 total. Theegala had four birdies on Wednesday and 11 for the tournament.
Feagler has now been in the top 20 at all four spring tournaments with his 20th-place finish with a 2-over 218 (70-77-71). His 1-under 71 was one of the better rounds of the day. He had five birdies, including one on his final round of the tournament to move him into the top 20. He had a team-high 13 birdies over the three days.
Freshman Hunter Epson (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson HS) tied for 42nd at 225 (73-78-74), sophomore Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) tied for 46th at 226 (77-73-76) and freshman Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) was 56th at 228 (68-77-83). Epson was one of just three players at the tournament to have two eagles. He also had four birdies on Wednesday.
Pepperdine next plays at Stanford's Goodwin from March 30-April 1.
