Nov. 19, 2017 IRVINE, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's water polo team fell to Long Beach State in the third overtime period of the third place game in the Golden Coast Conference Tournament on Sunday, 10-9. Sam Paur had three goals for the Waves in the game.
Paur (Poway, Calif./Poway HS) scored his second goal of the game with 2:31 left in the fourth to push the game into overtime, and then scored his third of the game in the first overtime period, keeping the Waves alive. The comeback, however, could not be completed, as Long Beach State scored with 46 seconds left in the third overtime period to end the game.

In a game with eight lead changes, it only seemed appropriate for it to go into overtime. The Waves opened the game with two straight goals, one from Sean Thomas (Covina, Calif./Loyola HS) and one from Mate Toth (Balatonalmadi, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Boarding School) to give the Waves the lead going to the second quarter. Mark Urban (Budapest, Hungary/Diablo Valley College) scored the Waves' lone goal in the second, tying the game leading into half time, 4-4.
The second half was more of the same. The Waves had four goals in the third period, one from Paur, two from Marko Asic (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) and one from Thomas, while Zack Rhodes (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) kept the 49ers to just two goals. Paur had the Waves lone goal in the fourth, tying the game and sending it to Overtime. Rhodes had 12 saves on the night.
