
Waves Defeat Claremont, No. 17 Pomona

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 8 Pepperdine men's water polo team came out on top of a hard fought matchup with No. 17 Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, by a 10-6 margin in the team's first game of the day. The team also defeated Claremont Mudd-Scripps by a score of 18-8. Mark Urban was the Waves' top scorer of the day, netting six balls over both matches.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Waves and Sagehens were locked in a 6-6 tie before Sam Paur (Poway, Calif./Poway HS) put a ball past the Pomona goalkeeper. The Waves would not let up, grabbing goals from Marko Asic (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS), Urban (Budapest, Hungary/Diablo Valley College), and Chris Dilworth (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) to put the Sagehens away, 10-6.
Asic had two goals in the first half, giving him a hat trick, and Dilworth had two goals in the third to give him a hat trick as well. Goals from Kenneth Keller (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) and George Mooney (Whittier, Calif./La Serna HS) gave the Waves their final total of 10 goals. Zack Rhodes (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) had 11 saves in the game.

In the Waves' first game of the day, the team came our firing from the beginning, getting quick goals from Dilworth, Paur, and Sean Thomas (Covina, Calif./Loyola HS). Those three goals gave the Waves a lead that they would not give up the whole game. Urban scored five goals, and Thomas finished with a hat trick. Asic, Mooney, and Mate Toth (Balatonalmadi, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Boarding School) each had two goals on the game, while Dilworth, Paur, and Justin Cowan (Rossmoor, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) each finished with a single goal, giving the Waves a final goal total of 18. Rhodes had eight saves in the first game.
