MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 8 Pepperdine men's water polo team won its second Golden Coast Conference game of the year on Friday night, defeating No. 11 San Jose State, 9-8 at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. Mate Toth had a hat trick for the Waves, leading the team.

The Waves entered the fourth quarter in a 6-6 tie. Toth (Balatonalmadi, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Boarding School) completed his hat trick to give the Waves the lead, followed by goals from Kenneth Keller (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) and George Mooney (Whittier, Calif./La Serna HS) that would cement the win for the Waves. The Spartans would not give up, getting a chance to tie the game at nine with just under a minute to play with a penalty shot. The shot went off the right post, sealing the victory for the Waves. The Waves improve to 15-10 and 2-1 in GCC plpay on the year, while the Spartans fall to 13-9 and 1-3 in GCC play.
In the quarters preceding, two goals from Justin Cowan (Rossmoor, Calif./Los Alamitos HS), Toth's other two goals, and goals from Mark Urban (Budapest, Hungary/Diablo Valley College) and Marko Asic (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) kept the Waves close. Zack Rhodes (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) had seven saves on the night.
