LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's water polo team started off the season at the Triton Invitational with two wins on Saturday, beating Claremont Mudd-Scripps 15-8 in the morning and then downing Redlands 13-3 to close the day.
Marko Asic led the Waves on the day with eight total goals in the two games and freshman Mate Toth posted seven goals in his debut for Pepperdine.
The Waves opened the day with a victory over Claremont Mudd-Scripps, using a six-goal run in the first and second quarters to pull away. Pepperdine and the Stags were tied at 2-2 through the first 4:35 of play, but the Waves rattled off three straight scores to end the first period. Pepperdine then opened the second with three straight goals to make it an 8-2 game.
The Stags would never climb back in it. Asic (Laguna Nigel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) and freshman Toth (Balatonalmadi, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Boarding School) each scored four goals in the opener, and Mark Urban (Budapest, Hungary//Diablo Valley College) posted three scores. Philippe Marco (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) got the start in goal and posted five saves.
The Waves had a .517 shooting percentage and converted on five of their nine power-play chances. Pepperdine also made 3-of-3 penalty shots.
In the late game, it was again tied after one quarter of play, with Pepperdine and Redlands knotted at 2-2. The Waves would hold the Bulldogs scoreless in the second quarter, taking a 7-2 lead into the half. Toth scored two straight to open the second quarter, giving Pepperdine the lead for good.
Overall the Waves scored 11 unanswered over the second and third quarters to grab a commanding 13-2 lead. Redlands would post the only score in the fourth quarter, making it a 13-3 game.
Asic had his second four-goal game of the day for the Waves and Zack Rhodes (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) posted 11 saves. Toth scored three goals. The Waves were 4-for-6 on power-plays.
Pepperdine will be back in action next weekend, when they head to the Inland Empire Invite.
