WOLCOTT, Colorado " Tatiana Wijaya fired a 4-under 68 on Monday to give her the first-round lead at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, while the Pepperdine women's golf team is in second place.
The Waves shot a 3-over 291 and are four shots back of San Diego State at the par-72 Red Sky Golf Club. The second round is Tuesday while the third and final round is Wednesday. Pepperdine has won this tournament four times in the seven years it has been contested. The event features one team from 18 different Division I conferences.
Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia) equaled her career-best round of 4-under. The Pepperdine junior has a two-shot lead in the individual race. She had a total of eight birdies on the day. Three came in the first five holes, and then she ended with five birdies over the final six holes, including a run of four straight between 13 and 16.
She wasn't the only Wave to get off to a good start. Junior Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C.) is tied for fourth place after a 1-under 71, and sophomore Hira Naveed (Perth, Australia) is tied for ninth place after a 1-over 73. Both Waves had three birdies during their rounds.
Sophomore Hannah Haythorne (Honolulu, Hawai'i/IMG Academy) is tied for 61st place at 79 and freshman Momoka Kobori (Rangiora, New Zealand) is 88th at 87. Haythorne had four birdies.
