LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 9 Pepperdine men's water polo team picked up a road win on Saturday afternoon, beating Loyola Marymount 11-6 in a Wells Fargo PCH Cup battle.
In what became a close game in the second half, the Waves outscored LMU 5-1 in the fourth quarter to take control. Pepperdine is now 7-1 on the year, while the Lions fall to 2-6.
The Waves held a 5-2 lead coming out of the half, but LMU scored three straight goals to tie things up with 2:42 left in the quarter. Cristian Bridley (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) found the back of the net for the Waves with just under a minute left in the period to end the Lions' run and put Pepperdine up 6-5 heading to the fourth.
Mark Urban (Budapest, Hungary//Diablo Valley College) would score on a powerplay for the Waves early in the fourth quarter to put Pepperdine up by two. Marko Asic (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) added his fourth goal of the day to make it 8-5 in the Waves' favor with 6:51 to play.
Three more Pepperdine goals put the game out of reach. The Lions would score just once in the final period, netting a goal with 1:33 to play.
Asic finished the day with five goals, matching his season high, and Charles Olsen (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) added two.
Pepperdine was 4-of-12 on its powerplay opportunities and made its only penalty shot. LMU was 3-for-9 on powerplays and 2-for-1 on penalty shots.
The Waves play next weekend at the Mountain Pacific Invitational hosted by California, with play starting on Friday and running through Sunday.
