MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine baseball assistant coach Rolando Garza will be traveling to Cary, N.C. this week to coach the Southern California 16U/17U teams at the National Team Identification Series hosted by USA Baseball.
The tournament runs August 18-21 and is used to help USA Baseball identify players for the National Team selection process. The event is held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex and adjoining Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C.
"As one of the rising assistant coaches in college baseball, we are thrilled to have Rolando Garza coach the USA Baseball Southern California NTIS 16U/17U teams," said Andy Rojo, regional director of the Southern California NTIS program. "Not only is the event a tremendous experience for selected players but having a college coach guide them throughout the week adds a special perspective. Rolando's energy, passion and knowledge of the game will assist these players as they strive to represent their country."
From the NTIS, USA Baseball will invite a minimum of 58 players to future National Team Trials, National Team Development Program, and Tournament of Stars opportunities with the ultimate goal of being selected to represent our country as part of Team USA in 2017.
Garza joins other respected collegiate coaches, former professional players and professional scouts as a coach at the tournament.
Garza just finished his first year on staff at Pepperdine as the team's pitching coach. He has coached at the minor league and collegiate levels and played professionally in the minor leagues for 10 years. He helped the Waves' staff to a 3.57 ERA this past season and guided righty A.J. Puckett to a first-team All-American campaign.
