NAPA, Calif. " The Pepperdine women's golf team is having its best stretch of the season at the right time, as the Waves concluded the Silverado Showdown on Tuesday with an impressive third-place finish.
The Waves have now posted season-best back-to-back third-place finishes against strong competition heading into the upcoming West Coast Conference Championships. Pepperdine will be looking for its 15th straight league title at the Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, Calif., from April 18-20.
The Waves finished with a three-day total of 880 (294-294-292) at the par-72 North Course at the Silverado Resort. The only two teams to finish ahead of Pepperdine were #11 Stanford and #23 Oregon, while the Waves earned head-to-head victories over seven more of Golfstat's top 50 teams, plus two of their WCC competitors in Gonzaga and San Francisco.
Pepperdine's 292 on Tuesday tied for the best team score of the day, as the Waves got a 2-under 70 from senior Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Iolani HS) and a 1-under 71 from freshman Patricia Wong (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS).
Freshman Hira Naveed (Perth, Australia) was the top-finishing Wave as she tied for seventh place with a 2-over 218 (71-73-74). It was her second straight top-10 finish.
After being tied for 72nd after the first round, Chow climbed all the way to a tie for 18th place with a total of 221 (79-72-70). Both she and Naveed led the team with 10 birdies for the tournament. Chow's final round included four birdies. It was her 33rd career below-par round (third all-time at Pepperdine) and her 25th top-20 finish (eighth all-time at Pepperdine).
Freshman Hannah Haythorne (Honolulu, Hawai'i/IMG Academy) tied for 42nd at 226 (71-76-79), Wong tied for 47th at 228 (73-84-71) and sophomore Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia) tied for 57th at 230 (80-73-77). Wong had five birdies during her final round.
