SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. " The Pepperdine men's golf team kept alive two notable program-record streaks with its fifth-place finish and its team score of 1-under at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate on Sunday.
It's the seventh straight tournament for the Waves with a top-five finish, breaking the school record of six set in the spring of 1996. It's also the seventh straight time Pepperdine has finished at par or better. Before this run, it had never happened more than twice in a row, and seven times in a season is also a school record.
The Waves dropped a bit in the final round, going from third to fifth and finishing with a two-day total of 863 (286-283-294) at the par-72 Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain. Pepperdine, ranked 33rd by Golfstat, finished ahead of the four other West Coast Conference schools in the field (San Francisco, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's and Pacific).
Unfortunately, the Waves' best finisher was competing as an individual. Freshman Lorenzo Magagnin (Treviso, Italy) tied for 10th place with a 2-under 214 (68-73-73), both of which were career bests.
Among the five in the lineup, freshman Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) was tops with a 20th-place result after an even-par 216 (73-68-75).
Senior Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) tied for 21st at 217 (70-75-72), freshman Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) tied for 25th at 218 (76-69-73), junior Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) tied for 27th at 219 (71-71-77) and junior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) tied for 45th at 224 (72-78-74).
Wedel had a team-high five birdies on the day while Magagnin and Theegala had four. Wedel and Theegala both had a team-best 13 for the tournament.
The Waves next compete The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford, from March 24-26.
