PALO ALTO, Calif. " The Pepperdine men's golf team posted a solid sixth-place finish at The Goodwin on Saturday, which included a head-to-head victory over the nation's top-ranked team.
The 38th-ranked Waves finished with a 10-over 850 (287-283-280) at the par-70 Stanford Golf Course, improving their score by multiple strokes each day.
Pepperdine defeated USC (ranked #1 by Golfstat) for the second time this spring, as well as #31 SMU and #40 UCLA. With the West Coast Conference Championships just a little more than three weeks away, the Waves also beat all six WCC teams in the field. Saint Mary's was closest to the Waves but finished 11 strokes behind in 10th place.
The Waves saw their school-record streak of seven straight top-five finishes come to an end, but considering that 25 teams were in the field, the Waves still managed a top-quarter result (a Stanford "B" team appears in the standings but doesn't count toward team results).
Junior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) and freshman Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) both shot 2-under 68s to wrap up the tournament and to help the Waves to an even-par team score on Saturday.
Freshman Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) had the top finish, as he tied for 17th place with a 2-over 212 (71-69-72). It was his fifth top-20 result in eight tournaments. He had four birdies during his final round.
Cootes tied for 25th place with a 3-over 213 (73-72-68). He had three birdies and just one bogey during his final round.
Senior Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) tied for 29th at 214 (69-73-72), Geibel tied for 35th at 215 (74-73-68) and freshman Lorenzo Magagnin (Treviso, Italy) tied for 70th at 220 (74-69-77). Geibel's front nine included five birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey, and his back nine consisted of nine straight pars.
Playing as an individual, junior Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) took 134th at 236 (78-77-81).
Pepperdine next plays at the 3M Augusta Invitational on April 2-3.
