Women's Golf Has Great Start in Hawai'i

KANE'OHE, O'ahu, Hawai'i " The Pepperdine women's golf team played its best round of the season on Tuesday and stands in a tie for second place after the first day of action at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational.

The Waves are tied with 28th-ranked Texas A&M after an even-par 576 at the par-72 Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course. Pepperdine had a 6-over 294 in the morning round, then followed it with a 6-under 282 in the afternoon. #10 Oklahoma State leads the tournament by seven shots with a 7-under 569.

The third and final round is on Wednesday.

Freshman Hira Naveed (Perth, Australia), who joined the team at the semester break, recorded the first two below-par rounds of her college career and is in second place with a 4-under 140 (69-71). She's just one shot back of the leader, Maddie McCrary of Oklahoma State. Naveed had a total of nine birdies on the day.

Right behind her is senior Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Iolani HS), who is tied for third place with a 3-under 141 (73-68). Chow had three birdies in the morning, then five more in the afternoon when she shot a 4-under.

Also in the lineup, freshman Patricia Wong (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS) is tied for 17th at 148 (77-71), sophomore Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia) is tied for 23rd at 149 (77-72) and sophomore Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C.) is tied for 31st at 151 (75-76). Wong had four birdies during her 1-under afternoon round.

Playing as individuals, freshman Hannah Haythorne (Honolulu, Hawai'i/IMG Academy) is tied for 17th place at 148 (75-73) and junior Alessandra Arza (Asuncion, Paraguay) is tied for 71st at 160 (81-79). Haythorne had eight birdies on Tuesday.
