WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- The Pepperdine men's golf team continued a record run of success with a second-place finish and a team score of 6-under at its own Southwestern Jones Invitational on Tuesday.
It's the sixth consecutive top-five finish for the Waves, which hasn't happened since the spring of 1996. The Waves have also been at or below par at each of the six tournaments. Before this streak, it had never happened more than twice in a row, and six times in a single season is a program record.
Pepperdine wasn't quite able to match its strong play during Monday's first two rounds at the par-72 North Ranch Country Club, but did enough to hold off San Diego State for second place. Sixth-ranked USC ran away with the team victory, finishing at 26-under. The Waves had a 6-under 858 (285-280-293), five shots better than the Aztecs.
The Waves, ranked 42nd by Golfstat, defeated four top-50 teams, including #20 San Diego State and #27 Oregon.
"You always want to win but after finishing second to a really, really good team, I think there's nothing to feel bad about," Pepperdine Coach Michael Beard said. "I think the tournament went great. We got some nice feedback, the weather was awesome, the condition of the course was great. We love having it here at North Ranch. It's nice to be closer to campus and have people here supporting us."
Senior Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) tied for fifth place with a 5-under 211 (72-69-70). His final round included two eagles and three birdies. Wedel is up to 38 career below-par rounds, fifth all-time at Pepperdine. His 13th career top-10 finish gives him sole possession of ninth place on the Waves' list.
Freshmen Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) and Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) turned in top-20 performances. Theegala tied for 10th with a 1-under 215 (70-68-77) and Cootes tied for 17th with a 1-over 217 (71-70-76).
Rounding out the lineup, junior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) tied for 23rd place at 218 (72-75-71) and freshman Lorenzo Magagnin (Treviso, Italy) was 39th at 224 (75-73-76). Geibel had an eagle on the par-5 12th hole.
Playing as individuals, junior Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) tied for 26th place at 220 (77-71-72) and sophomore Anthony Cecere (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal School) tied for 51st at 228 (76-76-76).
The Waves will waste no time before starting their next tournament, the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Ariz., which is this Saturday and Sunday (March 5-6).
