SPOKANE, Wash. " It was tough sledding offensively on the road for the Pepperdine women's basketball team against Gonzaga on Saturday afternoon as the Waves fell 56-39 to the Zags in a West Coast Conference contest.
The Waves shot a season low 24.5 percent from the floor and couldn't keep the Bulldogs in check in the second half after giving up just 21 first half points. Pepperdine falls to 5-19 overall, 1-12 WCC, while Gonzaga moves to 16-9, 8-5 WCC.
In a low scoring first half, Gonzaga led 21-17 at the break thanks to their eight field goals. Pepperdine hit just six shots in the first half, but grabbed seven offensive boards and made all four of their free throws.
The Bulldogs would score 35 points in the second half, grabbing their largest margin at the final buzzer with a 17 point lead. After holding Gonzaga to a 34 percent shooting clip in the first half, the Waves allowed 14 field goals in the second half as the home team shot 53.8 percent from the floor.
Laura Stockton led the way in the second half for the Zags, scoring eight of her game-high 14 points in the final two quarters. Each team only had one players score in double figures for the game. Erica Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) led Pepperdine with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Ogwumike scored five of her 10 points at the free throw line, getting just three shots to fall on the day.
The teams were nearly even in the rebounding column and Pepperdine held a 16-11 advantage in offensive boards, but Gonzaga scored 20 points off of turnovers to just eight for the Waves.
