Waves' Fourth Quarter Push Falls Short at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team made a fourth-quarter push, but came up short on the road at Cal Poly, falling 62-52 to the Mustangs on Saturday.

Pepperdine trailed by double digits to start the final period, but cut it to a four-point game, only to see Cal Poly pull away in the final minutes. The Waves fall to 0-7, while the Mustangs move to 4-4 on the year.

Cal Poly took a 49-38 lead into the fourth and extended the advantage out to a 15-point lead in the first 2:26 of the quarter. After Sydney Bordonaro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Burrell HS) hit a three and the Mustangs answered with two free throws, the Waves went on a 10-0 run to make it a 55-51 game with 4:39 to play.

Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) scored six of the 10 points during the run, hitting the layup to make it a four-point game and cap the run. Pepperdine went cold from there, however, getting just a free throw over the final 4:39 of play.

Yasmine Robinson-Bacote (Hillside, N.J./Hillside HS) led Pepperdine with 14 points and nine rebounds, falling just short of here fifth double-double of the season. Fecske had 13 points and seven rebounds, scoring 10 of her points in the second half. Cal Poly's Dynn Leaupepe led all scorers with 22 points in the game.

The Waves came out hot, hitting three of their first four three-point attempts to take a 13-6 lead midway through the first quarter. Cal Poly would come back to take a 35-25 lead by the half, scoring 18 points off 13 Pepperdine turnovers. The Waves outshot the Mustangs both from the field and three, hitting 40 percent from the floor and 42 percent from three. Robinson-Bacote scored 11 points and had six rebounds in the first half.

For the game, the Waves finished shooting 40 percent (8-of-20) from three, but were just 29.5 percent from the field. Pepperdine limited their turnovers in the second half, giving it away just five more times, but Cal Poly still held a 24-12 points off turnovers advantage and a 49-38 rebounding advantage. The Waves did get 22 points off the bench in the game.
