FULLERTON, California -- Allie Green scored 20 of her season-high 29 points in the first half as the Pepperdine women's basketball team went on the road to beat Cal State Fullerton, 69-58, on Saturday evening in non-conference play.
The Waves (1-9) picked up their first win of the season in emphatic fashion and with a strong defensive effort. They held the Titans (2-8) to 31.3% shooting while making a season-high 41.5% of their own attempts.
Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) was 8-for-9 from the floor in the first half and made all four of her three-point attempts as the Waves took a 40-25 lead at halftime. The senior guard finished just one point shy of her career best, and she ended 12-for-19 from the field and 4-for-5 from distance, plus seven rebounds. Her previous season best was 17 points.
Sophomore forward Yasmine Robinson-Bacote (Hillside, N.J./Hillside HS) added 18 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) had a productive game with five points and season highs of nine assists and nine rebounds.
Green had 10 of the Waves' first 12 points as Pepperdine jumped out to a 12-3 lead after 7 1/2 minutes. Cal State Fullerton narrowed the gap to 13-10 after the first quarter.
Green had another 10 points in the second quarter. At 30-25, Sitanggan completed a three-point play to start a 10-0 run to end the half. Sophomore guard Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) had the next five points and Robinson-Bacote made a lay-up with 29 seconds left to send the Waves into halftime with a 40-25 lead.
A good start to the second half pushed the Waves' lead to 22 at 51-29 after back-to-back buckets by Robinson-Bacote. It was again a 22-point lead after a Green basket made it 54-32, and the Waves took a 59-41 lead after three quarters.
The Waves didn't score for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and Cal State Fullerton closed the gap to 11 points at 61-50, and the Titans later made it a 10-point game at 63-53 with five minutes left. Baskets by Green and Robinson-Bacote pushed the advantage back up to 14, however, and the Waves went on to the victory.
Iman Lathan led the Titans with 19 points.
