SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Freshman Jasmine Gross highlighted the West Coast Conference postseason honors after earning All-WCC first team and All-Freshman Team accolades, as announced by the conference office this Monday afternoon. Sophomore Tarah Wylie also garnered honorable mention status.
Gross (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) was a staple both offensively and defensively for the Waves this season, earning both All-WCC first team and All-Freshman Team honors. She is one of only two freshmen named to the All-WCC first team, with the other coming from BYU. Throughout the season, she became the Pepperdine Rally Scoring Era Single-Season Block Leader with 154 blocks, excelling over the previous record of 143 which stood since the 2005 season when Sophia Milo achieved the feat. She also ranks 3rd in the Pepperdine record books for the all-time record which has stood at 158 blocks in a single-season since the 1991 and 1992 seasons. She finishes the season ranked 5th all-time and 2nd in the rally scoring era with 1.34 blocks/set in a single season.
Gross tabbed the Waves' lone WCC Player of the Week honor this season on October 31, after breaking the Waves' all-time single-match blocks record with 15 blocks against Pacific at home. The rally scoring record has been in place since 2003 when current Director of Operations Lyndsey Weisenberg (Hache) tabbed 13 on the road and the all-time record was solid at 14 which was achieved twice in Waves' history, when Carrie Romer did so against Colorado State at home in 1996 and Lesli Aslund did so against Santa Clara at home in 1991.
The Portland, Ore. native tabbed 2.73 points/set for the Waves, after amassing 1.34 blocks/set, 1.94 kills/set, 0.51 digs/set and 0.06 aces/set in 115 sets played this season. She tallied 154 total blocks, including 140 block assists and 14 solo rejections. The freshman also picked up a .293 hitting percentage after smashing 223 kills with only 65 errors on 540 swings. She finished the season ranked 17th nationally in total blocks and 27th in blocks/set, while topping the WCC charts in both categories as well. She led the Waves in blocks in 21 matches and posted five or more blocks in a match on 18 separate occasions. She tabbed six double-figure kill matches and one double-figure block output, posting one double-double in blocks and kills throughout her premier campaign.
Wylie (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral HS) also had an impacting sophomore campaign, earning her second consecutive All-WCC postseason nod with the honorable mention accolade. After garnering WCC Freshman of the Year honors in the 2015 campaign, Wylie came out this season and continued to post solid numbers.
She added 2.75 points/set after amassing 0.94 blocks/set, 2.01 kills/set, 0.52 digs/set and led the team with 0.23 aces/set. The Indianapolis, Ind. transplant added a .262 hitting percentage after smashing down 233 kills with only 86 errors on 560 total attempts. She led the squad with 27 aces, and amassed 109 blocks, including eight solo rejections. In 30 matches, she posted 17 with a .250 hitting percentage or higher and led the Waves on 12 occasions. She led the team in 11 separate matches in both aces and blocks, and posted nine matches with double-figure kills and one with double-figure blocks.
