Nov. 15, 2016 MALIBU, Calif. - Head Coach Marcelo Ferreira and the Pepperdine men's tennis team announced the signing of Max Mendelsohn to a national letter-of-intent during this fall's signing period on Monday morning.
"I am thrilled to announce Max Mendelsohn as our new signee," said Ferreira. "Max embodies everything Pepperdine stands for. He has a very strong commitment to academics and excellence on the tennis court and above all else his commitment to his spiritual growth is unparalleled.
"I knew from the moment we met that I wanted him to be part of our family. He will be able to impact our team on and off the court and give our lineup a much needed depth. I can't wait to have him arrive on campus so we can get to work."
Mendelsohn, a native of Little Rock, Ark., will graduate Greenhill College Preparatory School in Dallas, Tex. in May. He is a standout in the classroom, earning a 4.0 grade point average and maintaining membership in the National Honor Society through every year possible at GCPS.
He posted a 13.26 UTR ranking in June and his other career-high rankings include No. 2 in the USTA rankings in 2013, 325 in the ITF rankings in 2016, and he ranked No. 3 in 2016 in the southern sectional rankings.
"The three things I was looking for in a school included a place I could grow as a person, a place I could grow as a student, and a place I could grow as a tennis player," Mendelsohn said. "Pepperdine was the only school that provided great academics, great tennis tradition, highest quality coaching, and a spiritual environment on the beach. Game over."
Mendelsohn reached the finals of the national hard courts singles and doubles with two silver balls in 2013, finished third in the national clay courts with a bronze ball in 2013, finished third in doubles at the winter nationals in 2014 and won the National Open in Arlington, Texas in May, 2013. In the national selection tournament, he finished in the finals of doubles in Philadelphia, Penn. in May, 2016. He won the Midland, Texas national selection doubles in October, 2016, and reached the semifinals in doubles at the Tulsa ITF Grade B1 in 2015.
