HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colorado " The Pepperdine women's golf team will head into Sunday's final round of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate with a four-shot lead over host Denver, while sophomore Hira Naveed is tied for first place in the individual standings.
It looks like a two-team race between the Waves and the Pioneers, as Pepperdine has a two-day total of a 6-under 570 (280-290) at the par-72 Highlands Ranch Golf Course, with Denver at 574 and Nebraska in third place way back at 588.
The Waves' score of 6-under after 36 holes is the fifth-best mark in program history.
Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs is trying for her 50th career tournament victory. All teams will begin the third and final round via a shotgun start at 9 a.m. MT on Sunday.
Naveed (Perth, Australia) has a 4-under 140 after her second straight 2-under 70. She'll go for her first collegiate title on Sunday and will be playing head-to-head against co-leader Sophie Newlove of Denver. Naveed had four birdies during her front nine today, while recording nine straight pars on the back nine.
Naveed is one of four Waves in the top six. Sophomore Patricia Wong (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS) is fourth with a 2-under 142 (70-72), while junior Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C.) is tied for fifth with a 1-under 143 (70-73). Playing as an individual, senior Alessandra Arza (Asuncion, Paraguay) is also tied for fifth with a 1-under 143 (70-73). Wong and Arza each had three birdies on Saturday.
Junior Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia) is tied for 11th at 145 (70-75) and sophomore Hannah Haythorne (Honolulu, Hawai'i/IMG Academy) is tied for 26th at 148 (72-76).
