First-Round Results

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colorado " The Pepperdine women's golf team has opened up a nine-stroke lead after Friday's first round of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate as five members of the squad finished with 2-under 70s.

The Waves shot an 8-under 280 at the par-72 Highlands Ranch Golf Course and lead host Denver by nine strokes. Colorado State is in third, 12 shots back. The 8-under ties as the seventh-best single-round score in program history.

The second round is Saturday and the third and final round is Sunday.

Four players in the lineup shot a 2-under 70 and are all tied for fourth place: juniors Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C.) and sophomores Hira Naveed (Perth, Australia) and Patricia Wong (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS).

Wijaya had a team-high five birdies (four of which came in a six-hole stretch midway through the round), while Wong had three birdies (all in a row on holes 6-7-8) and an eagle on the par-5 11th hole. Naveed had four birdies and Zhu had two birdies and zero bogeys.

The fifth player in the lineup, sophomore Hannah Haythorne (Honolulu, Hawai'i/IMG Academy), is tied for 13th after shooting an even-par 72. She had four birdies.

Senior Alessandra Arza (Asuncion, Paraguay), playing as an individual, is the other Wave who finished with a 2-under 70. She had five birdies on the day, including three in the final five holes.
