Pepperdine-Santa Clara Box Score
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Pepperdine men's basketball team came from 15 points down to take a late lead, but Santa Clara's Jared Brownridge hit a three-pointer with 1.3 seconds left to lift the Broncos to a 62-60 victory in West Coast Conference action on Thursday night.
The Waves (10-7, 3-3 WCC) struggled for most of the first 32 minutes, but turned things around late. An 11-0 run gave Pepperdine a one-point lead, 58-57, over the Broncos (7-12, 3-4 WCC) with 4 1/2 minutes left.
The Waves still led 60-59 with three minutes to play after a basket by senior forward Stacy Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS). But the Waves would miss their final three shots and commit one turnover. The Broncos were also misfiring, going 0-for-3, but got the ball back for their final possession with 27.2 seconds left.
Pepperdine had a couple of fouls to give, and used both to work down the clock. Santa Clara inbounded the ball with 9.0 seconds left and got it to Brownridge, who dribbled around a bit and into the left corner. Despite being 0-for-4 from distance and 3-for-12 overall at that point, he made the shot to give Santa Clara the win. A full-court heave by the Waves was off the mark.
The Waves had won their previous three games by a total of 11 points, but couldn't get their run of luck in close games to continue (both Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary's missed three-pointers at the end of three-point games).
Senior forward Jett Raines (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS) had 14 points and nine rebounds, and junior guard Lamond Murray Jr. (Los Angeles, Calif./Bishop Montgomery HS) also had 14 points. Junior guard Jeremy Major (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS) added 11 points. Saddled with foul trouble, Davis finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
Pepperdine shot 40.4% for the game to Santa Clara's 42.4%. The Waves committed a season-low-tying six turnovers but only forced three of them.
The Waves got off to a good start, scoring the first six points of the game and taking a 13-9 lead after a lay-up by Davis. But Davis then picked up his second foul with 11:56 left and he sat down for the rest of the first half. Santa Clara went on an 11-3 run to go up 20-16, and eventually had a 38-30 lead at halftime.
Santa Clara's lead grew to 15 points at 49-34 with a little less than 13 minutes to play, and Davis picked up his fourth foul not long after. The Broncos' lead stayed around 10 until eight minutes remained and a score of 57-47.
All of a sudden, Pepperdine's fortunes changed. The Waves made six straight stops on defense and scored 11 straight points, five of them by Murray. It ended with a Raines lay-up that put Pepperdine in front 58-57 with 4 1/2 minutes to play (the first lead since 16-13).
Four Broncos scored in double-figures: Nate Kratch (15), KJ Feagin (14), Brownridge (12) and Henrik Jadersten (10). After giving up 38 first-half points, the Waves only allowed 24 in the second half.
Pepperdine ends its weekend road trip at San Francisco on Saturday (Jan. 16) at 1 p.m. in the WCC Game of the Week. It will be shown in Southern California on Time Warner Cable SportsNet. Fans can also listen to Pepperdine Hall of Famer Al Epstein via WaveCasts at PepperdineSports.com.
