LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 8 Pepperdine men's water polo team dropped a 9-7 decision to No. 13 UC Davis on the second day of the Triton Invitational on Sunday.

The Waves were unable to overcome a three-goal deficit at the half on Sunday, falling to 1-1 with the loss after opening the season with a win yesterday.

Pepperdine gave up three first-quarter goals and two in the second period to go down 5-3 at the break. Goals from Luke Hewko (Irvine, Calif./Servite HS) and Marko Asic (Laguna Nigel, Calif./Hana Hills HS) were all the Waves came up with in the first half, with both players scoring in the opening quarter.

Pepperdine outscored the Aggies 5-4 down the stretch, but it wasn't enough as UC Davis hung on for the win.

The Waves tied the game with 4:09 to play in the fourth quarter on a goal by Artak Arzumanyan (Glendale, Calif./Glendale HS), but the Aggies netted the last two scores of the game, including the final one with less than two minutes to play.

Arzumanyan, Hewko and Asic each scored twice in the game for the Waves. Zack Rhodes (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) came up with 14 saves in goal a day after he notched a career-high 20 saves against Air Force.

Pepperdine heads to LMU on Friday for its next contest and then plays at the UCLA Invite over the weekend. The Waves' first home game will be Sept. 24 against UC Santa Barbara.
