LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 10 Pepperdine men's water polo team put up a season-high 20 goals on Saturday in a 20-7 win over Claremont Mudd-Scripps at the UCLA Invite.

The Waves got six goals from Luke Hewko (Irvine, Calif./Servite HS) in the victory, moving to 3-1 on the season after also beating rival LMU yesterday.

Pepperdine led by just one goal after a low-scoring first period, taking a 2-1 lead into the second quarter before opening up the scoring with six goals. The Waves led 8-4 at the half and would add six goals in each of the next two quarters.

Hewko scored three of his six goals in the second quarter to help the Waves open up the four-goal lead. The Stags came out of the break and scored the first two goals of the second half, however, pulling to within two before Pepperdine rattled off six-straight scores to take a commanding 14-6 lead.

Mark Urban (Budapest, Hungary//Diablo Valley College) scored all three of his goals on the day in that decisive third period, finishing third on the team in scoring. Justin Cowan (Rossmoor, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) was second with four goals. Cowan posted three of his goals in the fourth quarter to help put the Stags away.

Zack Rhodes (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) and Philippe Marco (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) split time in net for the Waves, holding CMS to just three goals in the second half. Rhodes posted eight saves and Marco had six.

Pepperdine continues early-season road play next week as the Waves travel to the Kap7 NorCal Invitational next Saturday and Sunday. Pepperdine plays its first home game on Sept. 24 against UC Santa Barbara.
