WACO, Texas -- Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox opened action today at the NCAA Doubles Championship at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor. The Waves bounced back from a bit of a slow start to win in three sets and advance to the round of 16.

Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) and Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS), ranked #23 in the ITA doubles poll, faced #37 Alyssa Hibberd and Anki Wind of Memphis in the first round.

Although the Tigers got off to a strong start, opening up a 4-0 lead in the first, the Waves began to gather momentum as the set progressed. Hibberd and Wind held on to win set one 6-4, but Cutura and Maddox controlled the tempo of the second frame. The Waves broke serve to go ahead 5-3 and Memphis was unable to respond.

Cutura and Maddox cruised in set three, breaking early to close out the three set triumph, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

The Waves continue the NCAA Doubles Championship on Friday against either Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips of UCLA or Vanderbilt's Ashleigh Antal and Astra Sharma. Harrison and McPhillips, ranked #3 in the doubles poll, defeated #18 Antal and Sharma on Tuesday in the NCAA Championship team finals, but the Commodores still emerged with the 4-2 win to take home the program's first national title.
