SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The #42-ranked Pepperdine men's tennis team put up a solid fight, but in the end was unable get past #22 San Diego in the finals of the West Coast Conference tournament. The top-seeded Toreros won their second-straight conference title with today's 4-1 win over the second-seeded Waves.
Pepperdine, 17-8 on the year, must now await the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, set to air on Tuesday, April 28 at 2:30 p.m. on NCAA.com
"I'm very proud of how this team competed, not only this weekend but the entire season," said first-year head coach Marcelo Ferreira. "Every player embraced our philosophy and fought so hard for each other, and for the program. The match today was incredibly close; small details determine the outcome of the match. Our guys laid it all out on the line, but unfortunately we came up short today. Credit goes to USD for capitalizing on the opportunities they created."
The Waves delivered arguably one of their best complete doubles performances of the season, but fell just short of taking the point.
#45-ranked Filip Vittek and Jordan Angus got one on the board for USD at No. 1, but matches at No. 2 and No. 3 played out closely and could have fallen either way.
Ultimately, Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) and Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) lost by just a single break of serve, 8-6 to Ciaran Fitzgerald and Geoffrey Fosso at No. 3.
The match at No. 2 was tied at 7-7 when action was suspended.
Vittek scored another point in singles before Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) put a point on the board for Pepperdine. The freshman dispatched Fitzgerald in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.
Fosso defeated Luca Marquard (Bensheim, Germany/Goeth Gymnasium Bensheim) at No. 5 for the third point, but the remaining three matches were still up for grabs.
Although Menichella won his first frame against Angus, 7-5, the Torero bounced back and won the next two stanzas, 6-3, 6-2, to tally the dual-clinching fourth point.
Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) and Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) both suffered narrow losses in their respective first sets. Both found themselves deadlocked in their second sets when San Diego put the dual away.
Iamachkine and Pane were both honored as WCC All-Tournament selections in both singles and doubles after the match.
