MALIBU, Calif. -- The #41 Pepperdine men's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to #17 San Diego in Malibu on Wednesday evening. The Waves gave the Toreros a solid run for their money in both singles and doubles, but ultimately fell short of victory against the top-20 foe.
Pepperdine moves to 11-8 overall and 3-2 in West Coast Conference play with the loss. USD improves to 15-4 and remains in first place in the league at 5-0.
San Diego got on the board first in doubles, with a win at No. 2, but Luca Marquard (Bensheim, Germany/Goeth Gymnasium Bensheim) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) got one back at No. 3 for Pepperdine. The duo downed Ciaran Fitzgerald and Geoffrey Fosso, 6-3.
In the deciding match, Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) and Rakshay Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent's High School) battled to get back on serve after falling behind a break, but #43-ranked Jordan Angus and Filip Vittek held on to win 6-3 and take the point for USD.
Angus scored the Torero's second point with a win over Thakkar in singles play before Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) put a point on the board for Pepperdine. The freshman picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win vs. Romain Kalaydjian to improve to a team-best 12-5 in dual play this season.
Fosso extended San Diego's lead to 3-1 with a win at No. 6, but the Waves battled fiercely in the remaining three matches. Hadlich bounced back from a loss in the first set tiebreaker to force a third following his 6-2 triumph in the second. Pane was also in his third set when Fosso had completed his match.
Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) had dropped the first frame 7-3 in the tiebreaker to #57-ranked Vittek and was on serve in the second, trying to extend his match to a final set. The two were on serve all the way to the end, but Vittek earned the break he needed to win the match 7-5 and clinch the dual at 4-1.
Action on the other courts was halted with San Diego out of reach.
Pepperdine continues the week on Friday, April 3, with a road match at San Francisco. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m.
