Dane Suttle Inducted Into WCC Hall of Honor

March 8, 2015

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Saying that it was an "honor, a pleasure and a blessing to be standing on this stage," Dane Suttle, the all-time leading scorer in the history of Pepperdine men's basketball, was inducted into the West Coast Conference's Hall of Honor on Saturday morning.

Suttle joined nine other greats from WCC schools at a ceremony at the Orleans Hotel as part of the conference's seventh class of inductees.

After a video in which his former coach, Jim Harrick, saluted Suttle's career, some of the highlights from Suttle's induction speech included:

-- He thanked his former coaches including Harrick and assistant coach Craig Impelman, saying "Coach came to my house in South Central Los Angeles and told me, `It's going to be fine at the `Dine.' Everybody knows Coach Harrick is a great recruiter. It was a tough choice for me but it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. I couldn't have been who I was without Coach Harrick letting me be who I am."

-- He thanked several teammates who were in attendance, including Scott McCollum, Carmel Stevens, Bill Sadler and Derek Farren.

-- He introduced his daughter Audom and his son Dane Jr., who also played four years at Pepperdine.

-- He also said, "Getting a degree from Pepperdine means something to me. This is a special moment for me ... Basketball has meant a lot to me, but more importantly I've met special people throughout my life, and if I hadn't had the opportunity to go to Pepperdine I wouldn't have met those people."

Suttle ended his Pepperdine career in 1983 as the school's all-time leader in points, field goals made, assists, steals and games played. After averaging 23.4 points per game as a senior -- the third-best average in school single-season history and a figure that ranked him 14th nationally -- Suttle was named All-American honorable mention by the Associated Press and shared the West Coast Conference's Player of the Year award.

Over his four seasons playing for Harrick, the Waves went 75-39 (.658), won at least a share of three WCC regular-season titles and advanced to the postseason three times. Pepperdine appeared in the NIT his freshman year and in the NCAA Tournament when he was a junior and senior.

Suttle was taken by the Kansas City Kings in the seventh round of the 1983 NBA Draft, and he would play two seasons for the Kings.

The other nine inductees in this year's class were: Aleisha Cramer Rose (BYU soccer), Jason Bay (Gonzaga baseball), Rick Adelman (Loyola Marymount basketball), Elaina Oden (Pacific volleyball), Jim Sollars (Portland basketball), Odell Johnson (Saint Mary's basketball), Scott Thompson (San Diego basketball), Jim Brovelli (San Francisco basketball) and Bud Ogden (Santa Clara basketball).

Pepperdine's previous six inductees were Doug Christie, Gail Hopkins, Wayne Wright, Dana Jones, Katherine Hull and Mike Scott.
