PROVO, Utah -- The #14 Pepperdine women's tennis team defeated #54 BYU, 5-2 on Saturday afternoon in Provo, Utah. The Waves took the doubles point before charting four wins in singles to improve to 9-4 overall and a perfect 3-0 in West Coast Conference play.
The Waves took a 1-0 lead into singles after edging the Cougars in doubles. #25-ranked Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) and Christine Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) improved to 7-0 on the season following their 6-1 route vs. Katie Fitt and Savanah Ware.
Although BYU got one back at No. 3, Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) provided the difference make with a 6-4 triumph against Toby Miclat and Brittanie Eraso in the top match.
The Cougars knotted the score up at 1-1 courtesy of a win by Morgan Anderson, but Cutura put Pepperdine back out in front after her straight-set triumph at No. 5.
Laura Gulbe (Riga, Latvia/Murjāņu Sporta Ģimnāzija) extended the Waves' lead, 3-1, after dispatching Toby Miclat 7-5, 6-0 from the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
Maddox put Pepperdine put out of reach at 4-1 with her 6-2, 6-3 victory over Brittanie Eraso.
The Waves' ace, Guillermo -- up to #10 in the singles rankings -- dispatched Megan Sheenhan-Dizon, 6-2, 7-5 for her 10th consecutive win. The senior is now 25-4 on the season, including an 11-1 record in dual match play.
BYU scored once more to bring the final score to 5-2.
Next up, the Waves host San Francisco on Friday, April 3 and Santa Clara on Saturday, April 4.
