MALIBU, Calif. - Going up against their fourth top-15 ranked opponent of the season, the #21 Pepperdine women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss to #9 Cal on a hot, sunny day at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
The Golden Bears move to 10-2 on the season, while the Waves drop to 5-4. Although Pepperdine's record seems a little lackluster, all four of its losses are against teams that are currently in the top-10. Three of the four setbacks were determined by a 4-3 tally, including today's.
The dual started in doubles, where Cal got on the board first with a win at No. 1. Maegan Manasse and Denise Star, ranked #5 as a pair, broke serve to take a 4-2 lead and Pepperdine's Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) were unable to bounce back.
Christine Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) and Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul), ranked #73 in Tuesday's poll, will stand to move up considerably following their 6-3 triumph over #11 Zsofi Susanyi and Klara Fabikova.
The point rested on the No. 3 match, which was on serve 4-3 when action had wrapped on court two. Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS) and Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) were well matched against Lynn Chi and Karla Popovic, but were unable to break through for the victory and settled for the 7-5 loss.
Cal extended its lead to 3-0 in singles play before Cutura chalked a point for the Waves. The junior dispatched Cecilia Estlander 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
The Golden Bears clinched the dual with a straight-set win at No. 5.
Runglerdkriangkrai bounced back from a 6-3 loss in the first to take the next set from Starr by the same score. With the dual decided, the two players went to a 10-point super tiebreaker, which the Wave won 10-6 to score Pepperdine's second point of the afternoon.
Guillermo, ranked #15 in the singles poll, faced off against #4 Manasse. The Pepperdine ace dropped the first frame 6-4 before winning the second 7-4 in the tiebreaker. Guillermo rolled with the momentum and edged Manasse 10-8 in the supertiebreaker to bring the final score to 4-3.
Guillermo improves to 21-4 on the year, and now owns two wins over top-five ranked opponents.
Pepperdine faces Arizona State on the road on Thursday, March 19, before opening West Coast Conference action against Gonzaga on Sunday, March 22 in Malibu. The contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
