SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team dropped a 72-55 decision on the road to San Diego on Saturday.
The length of the Toreros gave Pepperdine problems all game long as USD rode a 46-24 rebounding advantage to victory.
Eight turnovers in the first 12 minutes led to a 24-12 lead for USD. After the Toreros pushed it a 16-point advantage, Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) hit a three for the Waves, making it an 11-point game at the 2:04 mark. The Toreros pushed it back to a 37-21 advantage by scoring five-straight going into the break.
The home team shot 45 percent in the opening period, to just a 33 percent shooting clip for Pepperdine. The Waves committed 10 turnovers in the first half to just four for USD.
A 9-2 run out of the break made it a 46-23 game and the Toreros would push the lead to as much as 27 in the second half.
The Waves cut it to a 17-point game with just over five minutes to go, but couldn't get any closer than within 16.
USD grabbed 20 offensive boards in the game, 17 of which came in the second half. The rebounding advantage led to 17 second chance points and 24 points in the paint.
Pepperdine did grab 10 steals in the game and scored 16 points off of 18 USD turnovers.
Sophia Ederaine posted a double-double for USD, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, and leading-scorer Malina Hood also added 11 points.
Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) led the Waves with 15 points. Shoushtari filled out the stat line with 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.
The loss drops Pepperdine to 6-18 overall, 1-12 WCC and moves USD to 19-4, 10-3 WCC. The Waves return home next week as they host Portland and Gonzaga.
