SAN DIEGO - The #30 Pepperdine women's tennis team overcame an early deficit to defeat San Diego State, 5-2, on the road on Friday afternoon. The Aztecs took the doubles point but the Waves proved to be too tough in singles, winning five of the six matches.

The Waves' Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) put a doubles win in the books from the top spot in the lineup, but not until after SDSU had secure the point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3.

Pepperdine (2-2) stormed back in singles, however, winning first sets on five of the six courts.

Guillermo charted a 6-4, 6-1 decision against Kristin Buth to tie the team score. Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) followed suit with a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Paola Diaz on court four.

The Waves extended their lead with wins at No. 3 and No. 5. Runglerdkriangkrai dispatched Jana Buth 6-2, 7-6 before Christine Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) clinched the dual win with a 6-1, 7-5 win versus Hailey Johnson.

Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) tallied Pepperdine's fifth point of the day, earning her first win of the season after being sidelined in the fall. The junior dropped set one 6-4 to Isabelle Hoorn before taking the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-3.

The Aztecs (2-2) tallied another point courtesy of Tami Nguyen in the final match of the day to finish.

The Waves return to Malibu to host Texas on Saturday, February 14 at 11 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m. match against TCU on Monday, February 16.
