SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team fell on the road to Santa Clara, 84-66, on Thursday night thanks to a cold shooting night.
Pepperdine started well, but the squad never found its shooting touch and Nici Gilday got hot from long range for the Broncos to help the home team pull away.
The Waves jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first 3:14 of play, but Santa Clara rattled off 12 straight points to take a six-point lead of their own. The two teams traded baskets from there, with two Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) free throws cutting it to a two-point game at the 7:34 mark. The Broncos responded with another run, going up 32-23 on a Gilday 3-pointer.
Santa Clara pushed its first half lead to as much as 14 points, and took a 42-30 lead into the break thanks to 46.9 percent shooting and 15 first-half points from Gilday. Wallace had 12 points in the first half, but the Waves were 0-for-5 from the 3-point line, while Santa Clara went 4-for-9 from long range.
Despite a three out of the gates from Gilday, the Waves were able to cut it back to a nine-point contest thanks to two Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) free throws. The Broncos again had the run to answer, though, scoring 10 straight to make it 59-40 with 14:08 to play.
The closest the Waves would come was within 15 down the stretch, as Pepperdine was never able to find the run it needed.
The Waves had four players score in double figures, including a career-high 11 points from Devin Stanback (West Hills, Calif./Chaminade HS). Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) and Wallace each led the way with 16 points and Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) added 10. Pepperdine shot just 36.2 percent on the night and did not hit a single three.
Gilday finished with 28 points for the Broncos, who shot 47.4 percent for the game and went 8-of-16 from 3-point territory. Gilday had six of the team's threes.
The loss drops the Waves to 7-20 overall, 2-14 in WCC play, while Santa Clara moves to 10-14 overall, 5-10 WCC. Pepperdine will be back in action on Saturday, when they take on San Francisco. Tip off for that game will be at 2 p.m.
