MALIBU, Calif. - Just two days after snagging its first top-25 win of the season, the #30-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team earned its first win of the year over a top-20 opponent. Although #17 TCU won the doubles point, the Waves were unstoppable in singles and took the dual 4-1.
Pepperdine, now 4-2 in 2015, was fresh off its 5-2 triumph over #25 Texas on Saturday.
The day began with doubles. TCU controlled the tempo at No. 3, while the Waves were in firm control at No. 2. The match at No. 1 was tight from start to finish.
Simona Parajova and Sofiko Kadzhaya charted a win at No. 3, but Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) and Christine Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) responded at No. 2, defeating Alexis Pereira and Palina Dubavets, 6-3.
Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) played #39-ranked Stefanie Tan and Seda Arantekin to a 3-3 tie, before TCU earned what would be the only break of serve they would need. The Waves put up a tough fight at the end, but bowed at 6-3.
Pepperdine quickly evened the score in singles, thanks to a TCU default. The Horned Frogs pulled Parajova, slated to play at No. 2, from the lineup, moving everyone else up a spot. With no player to fill the No. 6 slot, Cutura took the win and the Waves were awarded the point.
The Waves were simply dominant in singles, with all five players - Guillermo, Laura Gulbe (Riga, Latvia/Murjāņu Sporta Ģimnāzija), Runglerdkriangkrai, Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Maddox - winning their respective first sets. Pepperdine gave up a combined five games across the five sets.
With momentum rolling in the Waves' favor, it was a race to clinch. Guillermo dispatched Tan 6-2, 6-0 to give Pepperdine the 2-1 lead.
Maddox followed, downing Arantekin 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5.
Gulbe wound up with the clincher, after beating Sofiko Kadzhaya, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.
Capannolo was up 6-2, 5-2 when action was suspended. Runglerdkriangkrai was leading 4-3 in set two after shutting out Debavets 6-0 in the first.
The Waves are back in action next week Friday, February 27 to host UCLA at 1:30 p.m. on the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
