MALIBU, Calif. - The #30-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team displayed its strength in singles today and defeated #25 Texas, 5-2. The Waves lost the doubles point to the Longhorns before winning five of the six singles matches.

The battle for the doubles point came down to a tiebreaker, which Texas fell on the winning side of.

Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Christine Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) opened the day with an 8-2 triumph over Ratnika Batra and Lana Groenvynck, before the Longhorns answered with a win at No. 3.

At No. 1, Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) tangled with Ryann Foster and Danielle Wagland all the way to a 7-7 tie. The UT duo won in the tiebreaker, 7-4, to clinch the doubles point.

Pepperdine and Texas went game-for-game and set-for-set with each other to open singles play. Each side won first sets on three courts.

Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) and Guillermo both won in straight sets to give the Waves the 2-1 advantage. Cutura was unstoppable, topping Lina Padegimaite, 6-0, 6-3. Guillermo beat Foster, 6-3, 7-5.

The remaining four matches all went to third sets, where the Waves began to pull away. Runglerdkriangkrai extended her match to a third frame after dropping the first, but fell short against Neda Kiprcina in the final stanza, 6-3.

Maddox split sets with Groenvynck at No. 5 before taking the last set, 6-3.

Mere moments later, Capannolo put the finishing touches on her come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Wagland to put the Waves out of reach, 4-2.

Laura Gulbe (Riga, Latvia/Murjāņu Sporta Ģimnāzija) played out her match against Batra, and emerged with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.

This is Pepperdine's first win over a top-25 opponent this season.

The Waves continue the home stand on Monday, February 16 with a 1 p.m. match vs. #17 TCU.
