MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team dropped a 61-47 contest to Cal Poly on Wednesday night at home. It was the first home loss of the season for the 2-6 Waves.

Pepperdine kept it close for much of the contest, but the visiting Mustangs pulled away late to move to 4-3 on the year.

The Waves jumped out to an 8-4 lead behind two 3-pointers and a layup from Kayla Blair (Fairfield, Calif./Vanden HS), but the Mustangs proceeded to go on a 13-0 run to take a 17-8 lead with 3:15 left in the opening quarter. Blair hit a free throw and then Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) made a three-point play to bring the Waves within five. Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) knocked down a triple just before the quarter break to make it 17-15.

The Mustangs came out with an 8-0 run to start the second quarter, but Pepperdine responded with an 8-2 run to make it a 27-23 game at the 3:49 mark. Cal Poly would take a 32-27 lead into the half thanks to 45.5 percent shooting from the floor.

Pepperdine hit 8-of-9 free throws in the opening half and made three 3-pointers to stay within striking distance. Blair led the way with nine points in the first two quarters.

The teams traded baskets to open the third quarter until Erica Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) hit a three to tie the game at 34-34 midway through the period. Cal Poly would just stay ahead heading to the fourth, taking a 40-38 lead into the final quarter.

Midway through the fourth quarter the teams started trading threes. Ogwumike pulled the Waves to within four, 49-45, at the 4:23 mark with a long ball, but the Mustangs' Beth Balbierz answered with a triple to push it back to a seven-point game. Cal Poly would push it to a double-digit lead in the final two minutes behind another Balbierz 3-pointer and then free throws down the stretch.

Cal Poly's Hannah Gilbert led all players with 17 points in the game. Ogwumike posted a double-double for the Waves, scoring 11 points to go with her game-high 12 rebounds. Blair also had 11 points.

Pepperdine will be back in action this weekend as the Waves close out a three-game homestand on Saturday against Denver. That game will tip off at 3:30 p.m. and can be seen live on WaveCasts via TheW.tv.
