MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team picked up a 71-69 win at home on Sunday afternoon, downing the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in a non-conference contest.

Pepperdine got 24 points from Allie Green and 22 points from Erica Ogwumike to move to 2-5 on the year. UCSB falls to 1-6 with the loss. Both of the Waves' wins have come at home as Pepperdine has two more home games this week.

After the Waves had been up by double-digits in the second half, UCSB pulled to within three at the 5:15 mark on two free throws. Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) responded with an offensive board and put-back to make it a 59-54 game on the next possession. Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) then pushed it to a 64-56 lead with two free throws at the 2:42 mark, but UCSB responded with a three-point play from Makala Roper and then two free throws to make it 64-61.

Green had the response for Pepperdine, putting the Waves back up by five with a jumper at the 1:05 mark. Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) hit a pair of free throws to push it to a seven-point advantage. UCSB would battle back and pull to within three at 70-67 with 21.5 seconds to play. Despite missing a pair of free throws down the stretch, the Waves hung on for the two-point win, with a last-second half-court heave just missing for the Gauchos at the buzzer.

Pepperdine hit 27-of-38 foul shots in the game, while UCSB hit just 15-of-27.

The Waves jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first five minutes of action, but after a timeout, the Gauchos went on an 11-0 run to take a 13-11 lead and draw a timeout from the Pepperdine bench. The teams would enter the quarter break tied at 15-15.

The Waves went ahead by as much as five in the second quarter, but a 3-pointer by Roper put the visitors up 28-27 at the 2:27 mark. Green responded with a steal and three-point play to give the Waves the lead back at 31-28. After trading runs, Pepperdine took a 33-32 lead into the half. Green led all scorers with nine points in the first two quarters.

Pepperdine took the narrow lead into the break despite shooting just 29 percent in the opening two periods. The Waves made up for it with a 26-16 rebounding advantage, 11 of which came on the offensive end.

The Waves opened the second half with two straight baskets to take a five point lead that they would hold for much of the third quarter. A 6-0 run late in the period gave Pepperdine a 48-38 lead with 2:45 left. A 3-pointer and a free throw by UCSB made it a 54-48 game heading to the fourth quarter.

Ogwumike and Green were the only two players to score in double figures for Pepperdine, while the Gauchos got 27 points from Roper and 17 from Kali Jones. Green scored 15 of her 24 points in the second half and Ogwumike had 14 in the final two quarters.
