MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon, after giving up a long second-half goal.

The Waves fell despite dominating possession throughout the game and holding an 18-5 shot advantage. Pepperdine drops to 6-4-2, 1-1-0 WCC, while Saint Mary's moves to 6-5-2, 1-1-0 WCC.

The Waves took 12 shots in the opening period and held the Gaels to just two, but Pepperdine just couldn't find the goal they needed. The Waves came out firing, getting off three shots in the first several minutes, including one on target by Bri Visalli (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian HS).

Pepperdine got a couple of free kicks early in the half, with Christina Settles (Oceanside, Calif./Oceanside HS) getting a head on one that went wide in the 15th minute. Two minutes later, Emily Tanaka (Kailua, Hawaii/'Iolani School) also put her head on a ball, but it went wide as well.

Visalli put another ball on frame later in the half, but Saint Mary's keeper Julia McDonald made a diving save to keep it out of the net. McDonald made four saves in the first half and six total for the game.

It was early in the second half when Saint Mary's scored. Kiana Quarles capitalized on a Pepperdine giveaway in the 48th minute and sent a perfectly placed shot that just ducked into the upper right corner.

The Waves had opportunities as the game went on, but just couldn't capitalize. In the 68th minute Rylee Baisden (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) sent a good long ball into the box for Meghan Schoen (Sherwood, Ore./Sherwood HS) but it just missed her outstretched foot and went wide.

Mikayla Arcebido (Anaheim, Calif./Canyon HS) had a shot at the top of the box with three minutes to play, but her attempt took a deflection and McDonald made the save.

Pepperdine had two shots on goal in the second half and six total. The Gaels' goal was one of two balls on target for the visitors.

The Waves will be back in action on Friday when they hit the road against San Francisco. Pepperdine then takes on Santa Clara on the road next Sunday.
