MALIBU, Calif. " The No. 9 Pepperdine men's water polo team hung close with No. 2 Pacific at home on Saturday, but couldn't finish strong as the Tigers pulled away for a 16-11 win.

The loss drops the Waves to 11-10 overall and 1-4 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. Pacific moves to 20-2 overall, 6-0 MPSF.

Pepperdine trailed by just one after two quarters of play, but a 4-1 fourth quarter in favor of the visitors would put the game out of reach.

Five of the Waves' 11 goals came from Marko Asic (Laguna Nigel, Calif./Hana Hills HS) and Christopher Dilworth (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) and Sean Thomas (Covina, Calif./Loyola HS) each scored two. Kristzian Laczkovics scored five goals for Pacific and Devon Thumwood had four.

Pacific took a 5-4 lead after the first quarter and then the Waves played the Tigers even in the second to make it an 8-7 game at the break. Pacific took an 11-8 lead on a Tim Reeves goal with 2:58 left in the third quarter.

The Tigers would hold that two-goal advantage going to the fourth and then scored four straight to pull away in the final period.

Pepperdine will be back in action next weekend when they play at Stanford on Friday and at Cal on Sunday.
