MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 9 Pepperdine men's water polo team picked up its first MPSF win of the season on Saturday, beating San Jose State 14-8 at home.

Marko Asic (Laguna Nigel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) scored four goals for Pepperdine to lead the way as the Waves moved to 7-6 overall, 1-1 in conference play.

Pepperdine jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter, getting two goals from Asic to help build the four-goal lead. Asic's two scores came within seconds of each other late in the quarter to cap a four-goal run for the Waves.

The Spartans went on a run of their own to open the second quarter, making it a one-goal game, 5-4, with 1:49 left in the period. Kenneth Keller (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) broke the run with a score at the 1:19 mark and Wesley Sherburne (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS) scored on a fast-break to end the half and give Pepperdine a 7-4 lead at the break.

The teams traded a pair of goals each in the third period before the Waves would pull away in the fourth. Asic and Luke Hewko (Irvine, Calif./Servite HS) scored back-to-back goals in the fourth to make it a 12-7 Pepperdine lead with 3:47 to play. The Waves would hold on and outscore San Jose State 5-2 in the final period.

Artak Arzumanyan (Glendale, Calif./Glendale HS) and Asic each scored twice in the fourth. Sherburne, Arzumanyan, Madaras and Hewko each scored twice in the game for the Waves.

Pepperdine will be back in action next week when they host the Kap7 SoCal Invitational. The Waves open the invite against No. 8 UC Irvine.
